Full Moon in Cancer: Abiding with what’s small and true, in balance.

Good morning everyone,

This upcoming full moon in Cancer–January 3rd, depending on where you view from–is known as the Wolf moon, a time when the wolf’s howl is heard strikingly clearly amidst the silent, stark, and snowy winter landscape, maybe even with a ricochet (but not if you are in the Southern Hemisphere!).

It’s the first full moon of the Gregorian, solar calendar year. For this reason it usually gets emphasis; despite my title that de-emphasizes “bigness,” it is still appropriate. I will elaborate on my “tone-down” later. But before that, another contrasting amplifier to my “tone down” is that it’s another Super Moon.

A Super Moon is astronomically defined when the full moon takes place at the same time that the moon is closest to Earth during its (elliptical) orbit, also called perigee. This phenomenon causes the moon to look larger. This will be the 4th consecutive super moon since October.

What makes this particular Cancer full moon unique astrologically is that it is comes at a time when the Sun is sandwiched between Mars and Venus— all in close conjunction. Mercury is also forming a square aspect to Saturn. It’s this Mercury square Saturn aspect and its energy that endures because it carries on for a few brief days. It helps us remove what is no longer serving. The full moon is close to Jupiter, but not close enough (not with a tight enough orb) for it to have a significant influence on energy/meaning.

Since a full moon is astrologically “Sun opposite Moon” and the Sun is sandwiched in between transiting Mars and Venus in Capricorn, this full moon is opposite Venus and Mars. Cancer and Capricorn are the duality and the two-sides of the same coin. The opposition aspect brings clarity, objectivity, and sometimes ‘balancing’ tension. It’s a dynamic balance, not fixed. Cancer relates to inner world, home, and family; while Capricorn relates to the public, business, and reputation/status. Capricorn pursues outside “world” action, while Cancer pursues inner beingness and creation.

The call to balance the Masculine and Feminine response, action and receptivity, matters here. Since the moon culminates in Cancer, it values what is protective and requires tenderness. Often times this is the small. The small can be the unborn, the “just born,” and the creative urge for new life that wants to be born.

A Cancer full moon is a good closure for the festive holiday season which often involves family and home dynamics. Over the years, cultural interpretations for how to celebrate the new year have shifted in favor of widening into multi-cultural dynamics. Many celebrate the new year with the lunar calendar and consider the beginning of the year as the second new moon after the Winter Solstice on @December 21–the typical calendar in Asia. In recent years I’ve been hearing more and more people treat the Lunar New Year as a 2.0 version, or a “do over.” Gosh, take your pick.

I like this.

Basically it gives people a soft landing for a New Year. There’s not got to be a lot of haste around the start. In this day and age when living is like cramming for constant performance exams and everyone is eager to live “their best lives” all in this one, the pressure to live life “well” is a bit absurd, considering a good life also requires the balance of some rest and relaxation.

So, back to my title.

This morning I thought about how rare it actually is to have real success in most any endeavor, especially the most important endeavor: life. You could use the sperm and egg metaphor, which I will down below. Keep in mind that phenomena of healing is also a very delicate and tender process that requires not only quite a bit of willpower, but also a big dose of the wisdom of “allowing.” The body knows the way, it just needs to be supported. Back to my analogy.

It takes something like 300+ million sperm to fertilize an egg. Despite natural aberrations, it’s usually just the one sperm that fertilizes the egg. That means that all those other 299+ million are “wasted,” or shall I say they do have purpose but not in the endgame. They are part of the process. Only a few dozens actually contact the egg and work to weaken the outer layer or zona pellucida. But each one did play a role—just not the star role.

Nature works with probability and not necessarily with efficiency. The work is done by large numbers but what actually fertilizes is the one. See? The small one, or the bigness of the many… everything matters but focus is selective.

Similarly, look at planting seeds to create a plant. Hundreds to millions of seeds planted produce 1 plant. That is less than 1% of seeds make a mature plant.

So when we sit with this first lunation of 2026 (what we actually use to time the writing of the calendar, and therefore this solar calendar sets into motion the machinery of our global and societal systems), think about how many choices you’ve made in your long lifespan, the people you’ve canceled or who have canceled you, the failed attempts at tending to your own gardens, your own body and health, the creative projects that lay fallow; but not so fast: be very encouraged.

There is a small but abiding few values, adherent lifestyle passions, choices, creative developments, and long term close friendships that survive from year to year.

This is the precious few that I want you to focus on in this New Year, 2026. You might want to run out charging against the wind like a fire horse (wait for it…), but let’s first get our gear on, temper ourselves, and balance all our tendencies to charge or be lazy, size up our inner world one aspect of us against another while we prepare for this onset of 2026. This brand-spanking-New Year. What will you put your energy into to help it survive?

Take the time you need, rest, and nourish that inner world with this Cancer Full Moon, see what wants to truly live and carry on with you in 2026.

With love and appreciation,

Happy New Year, 2026

Ka 💗

P.S. That whole slogan “Go big or go home” came out of the Pluto in Capricorn years. We are now in the age of Aquarius. Pluto settled into Aquarius on November 19, 2024. So 2025 was its first full year in Aquarius— it will be in Aquarius until 2044. It’s time to take our power back from systems and corporations. It’s time to be an individual in full. It’s a long term trend.

  1. So, being a Cancer with a Cancer rising and my moon in Aries…I’ll lay back and wish my New Year in, while planting seeds of love, maybe a bit more loudly than I should, but strongly, from the roof tops. I think that will work Ka. Great post kind lady, may your New Year be a productive one…gently 🤣❤️🙏

  2. Were I to try to boil this down, to me it is saying: no life is either total failure or total success; just part of the process.

That means something, at the moment. And, at a time when I am beginning the transition – that may take a year or two – from work life into retirement, the question of what personal, inner quests will come to the fore is something of an issue.

As is the question: how many more lives to find the way home, at last?

Look after the little things may well be the best approach, for now at least.

    1. Yes, Simon, you are spot on with your assessment of what I was saying.

I’m ridiculously enthused that you are noting that this “means something, at the moment.” You ARE making a transition.

I like your other question, too. Since I was young I was saying “no more lives, this is the last one (for me.).” Then I took a bodhisattva vow. So… I guess not…my last (but probably definitely my last in this FORM). —> I hope you get the spiritual nourishment you need for YOUR most important steps and contemplations. This moon speaks to me closely as it’s conjunct my natal moon. I share what comes to me as it is my life’s work to share my own wisdom and experience. Our journeys are shared, and we are one; yet, we still have our own unique, “mental continuums.” I’m cheers-ing to yours. Thank you for sharing what you have shared.

      1. A bodhisattva vow? That is a big step. Whatever form you find (and I’m now thinking of the poem “My Law”) you will always carry what you were, what you are now. That is as it should be, of course.

At what age were you aware of wanting to cease incarnation? Just curious.

I’m also thinking of a song, I think from the Enya album “Dark Sky Island” that has lines:
        “We each have a journey;
        That’s how it goes.
        Sometimes together,
        And sometimes alone.”

Th album name and quote is from memory.

Life is nothing but transition, of course. But, somewhere out there, we are ever at rest in awareness. Oh, to be there.

        Sometimes, I feel so old.

But, onwards, ever onwards, and cheers to you too.

        Take care.

          1. Our souls connect like golden sunlight streaming, warming carrying into the energy that wraps our connection and consciousness.. the sky , seas , oceans , the stars are all part of our rendezvous into this realm of our bond. This is fantastic. It’s wonderful sharing this beautiful space with you. Thank you.

          2. I feel wrapped in the fabric of starlight consciousness, the blanket of this connection, that softly holds us within the auspices of ever-forming new terrain, forged with each turn of the pen and each quiver of thought, a tiny lightning ⚡️ bolt of the electric matrix of our brains strikes the keystrokes which makes the 1s and 0s into building blocks though our limbs, and grows the vortices of friendship.

          1. Pleasure 🤗.. you are intellectual and wisely creative and you make creative magic that ponders the senses and makes the reader want to read more. Making it interesting to read is a gift 💝 and you are hugely gifted n inspiring 🤗😘 thanks for sharing your mind and heart and knowledge!

  3. Insightful as always, Ka! I didn’t know it takes bunches of seeds before one grows into a plant. That explains some of gardening frustrations! I must say this new year already feels a bit lighter than the last, which felt enormously heavy and like there was no ease to it…ever. Of course Saturn has been in my sign (Pisces) for quite a while now and I know it’s leaving soon (finally!) so that might also why it already feels lighter to me. I *really* hope it’s lighter and brighter for everyone though. It seems like everyone could use some easier times to regain some energy and stamina for our many efforts and small wins :). Balance is indeed a noble goal. Happiest New Year blessings to you and yours!

    1. Thank you very much Kristen Ann. I really like writing the “Ann” in right now. Is there a reason why? lol. If anyone would know, it’d be you. Yes…. On a bigger, population-level scale, it’s not “one seed makes a plant.” It’s instead that we have to ask how many seeds are needed in order for one plant to successfully replace itself over time. To GET THAT ONE SUCCESSFUL SEED, plants usually have to produce many, many seeds. Here’s why: predation, drying out, rotting, (bad spot/environment and can’t thrive or lacking access to soil, shade, or water)., competition with other plants for the same resources (sadly this exists everywhere as well as cooperation!), and disease or natural disaster.

      Some interested facts:

      Weeds/Grasses 1 in 100 make it

Wildflowers: 1 in 1,000-10,000 make it

Trees: 1 in 10,000-1,000,000+ make it

Orchids: 1 in millions (See my reply to Mark who is ambitious enough to go for a chocolate orchid. lol).

Your chart has more than Saturn in Pisces… Also keep in mind that Neptune is the modern ruler of Pisces and will be moving and (very soon) settling into Aries for the very long stay. You definitely are on the cusp of transformation and finishing up stuff that must have felt frustrating at times. I’m so glad it’s lightening for you. Each of us has our own experience and so many unique factors in our charts. People underestimate the complexity of astrology all the time. There’s a layering and so many ways to look at it. It’s more fluid and readable than even the English language–as symbols are vast containers of energy. Regardless, Blessings!!! Glad you are here! I celebrate every step towards your ultimate freedom.

  4. What an interesting post for the new year, Ka. I enjoyed this perspective on the sperm/egg, seeds/plant, and how these metaphors apply to life as a whole. It’s fascinating to me how many answers to our questions (asked and unknown) are available in a study of nature. I love this slow approach to the new year and how filled it is with acceptance and gratefulness. Happy New Year, my friend. ❤ ❤ ❤

    1. Hi Diana! Happy New Year! I’m glad that you were getting the “life as a whole” part. There are parts and wholes, and ultimately there’s so much available in the study of nature. We are nature, matter of fact! Thank Goodness. We are not above it nor below it. I marvel so much within it. This new moon my focus is on the very smallest of all. I want to be with what is most adherent, abiding, and true. That is my goal and my focus. I share it with all of you. This is the deep foundation for life: we are all in it together, but we don’t all succeed. That’s the design. Our egos hate it. But, realistically, we do all succeed. Life shall and will always succeed, and our best success is to be in alignment with that.

May you feel the soft landing and entry be a smooth one for you. Much love! Ka

  5. I love your analogies Ka.. We may not all Be the ONE who sees or gets the prize, but we are all of us taking part of the process, in order to seed the New.

I feel these next couple of years we will need that balance. And I know I am already embracing that nourishing quieter space within.. This year my thoughts to myself were… While the outer world may appear chaotic.. I will be creating Beauty…

Lessons delivered quite literally within the chaos on our home front this last few months… And I have listened too, to my body, and what that is telling me..

I was born the year of the Wood Horse Ka… and I find it so interesting that this year is the year of the Fire Horse… Burning the old, at least for me… As I let go of yet more inner and outer baggage ..

What ever this coming New Year holds Ka… I am embracing it with an open heart… Knowing that we have to begin to ‘Abide with what is true’ in order to regain our balance, and get back on track with integrity and personal responsibility…

Many thanks dear Ka, for this forecast and for your lovely visit… Which I am just about to answer..

May you and your beautiful family have a very Happy, healthy, and harmonious year, May you be blessed guided and protected, as you continue your wonderful journey through Life!..

    Much love dearest Ka… 🙏💖💕

  6. Happy New Year! Love this piece and its exploration of masculine and feminine, seed and plant. Truly a soft landing for January after the hustle and bustle of seeing people and pushing through the holidays. ❤️

  7. I don’t hate many things, but the saying, “Go big or go home,” comes close to that feeling. Every effort makes a difference. I greatly appreciate your encouragement and reason about the process and the reminder that, “a good life also requires the balance of some rest and relaxation.” Peace and blessings to you and yours. ❤

    1. JoAnna, we are definitely on the same page! Thank you so much for reading; and, thank you for your peace and blessings sent to us ! Wishing you and your loved ones also a gentle and kind New Year! 🌠💕🌱 I think a humane culture and society could best work to buffer against the harshness of life with cooperation and shared progress, adapting with love and building the potentials in all. If we can improve the conditions for just one, we benefit the big picture. Love and hugs!

      1. Thank you for the reminder that helping just one makes a difference in the big picture. Like ripples in a pond. We do what we can… with balance. Love and hugs! ❤

        1. 💕💕💕
We are the one! But our egos miss that. Haha 🤣 mine does… all the time. I am not upset with ego btw, just a necessary illusion…
To be both the ripple and the object that makes it move… it’s really the gift of life.
Each one of us is so glorious.
Love and hugs deep into this 2026!

  8. I love that we are being asked to reflect and pause before this new year gallops into movement. 🐎

It feels like a sacred time to appreciate each step and your post is a beautiful reflection on this process and the importance of presence. Every experience has a purpose to unravel what is no longer needed to carry. Thank you Ka 🧡🧡🧡💫

    1. Thank you for your precious comment, Karen. It means so much to me that you loved the pause and reflection. I came across this quote just now in my reading and wanted to share it with you. It will follow after I say more below.

We are each so very precious in our own ways. As seeds produce even unusual forms from “prima materia” consciousness, we are each fulfilling our unique destinies. My focus is on that very unique and precious nature worth protecting that is invisible and live-giving in each of us. My focus was drawn here with this Full Moon in Cancer, so close to my own natal moon within a 1 degree orb. The message came from Spirit to write in this way and communicate it to all who would hear.

Now, here is the Chinese proverb: “With time and patience the mulberry becomes a silk gown.” Here’s to your sacred pause, Karen, and to the gifts that you are here to give, and those gifts that are under your deep protection. With love, Ka

  9. A beautiful invitation to a soft landing into 2026, and we sure do need it with the state of the world the way it is 😊. As someone who lives by slow projects, your images of sperm, seeds, and the fraction that actually takes root really land—important to understand most attempts are meant to compost the few that endure. Thank you, and wishing you a beautiful start to the year.
